Aunty Beryl Van Oploo
Gamillaroi woman. Aboriginal elder.
In October 2006, Aunty Beryl opened Yaama Dhiyaan Hospitality Training College in Darlington. Yaama Dhiyaan is Australia’s first and only hospitality college specialising in Indigenous culture and cuisine.
The college offers accredited Certificate II training in hospitality to Indigenous and non-Indigenous unemployed people. Yaama Dhiyaan assists students to find purpose and employment through the hospitality courses.
It is the transformation of lives that is the real work at Yaama Dhiyaan. Many of Aunty Beryl’s students have had difficult beginnings, and their new start at Yaama Dhiyaan assists them to move beyond their issues and reinstate a sense of family, putting the sharing and preparing of healthy food at the centre of their daily life.
